Westons donate $50M to speed treatments for brain diseases

The Weston family, which owns Loblaws, is donating $50 million through The W. Garfield Weston Foundation to create the Weston Brain Institute. The new donation will support Canadian research into neurodegenerative diseases of aging such as Parkinson’s, frontotemporal dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

Galen Weston Sr. is the Chairman of high-end fashion store Holt Renfrew, as well as owning Selfridges in the U.K., the De Bijenkorf department store chain in the Netherlands and Ogilvy in Montreal. His son, Galen Weston Jr., is the Chairman of Loblaws and has been featured in many President’s Choice commercials. He also appears as a guest judge on the successful CBC food competition Recipes to Riches, which is sponsored by Loblaws. Winners of the show have their recipes become available as President’s Choice products, available at Loblaws. Hilary Weston, a Director, was the 26th Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, serving from 1997 to 2002.

“These diseases are placing a huge and increasing burden on Canadians, in part because there are no ways to stop or slow down these diseases. Our goal is to accelerate breakthrough treatments for these diseases,” said Alexandra Stewart, the Executive Director of the Weston Brain Institute. Currently, one in 11 Canadians has Alzheimer’s disease, and that is just one of eight conditions the institute addresses.  In providing funding, the institute has collaborated with other organizations, including the Michael J. Fox’s Foundation for Parkinson’s Research.
