During an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Charlize Theron revealed what she ate in order to gain 50 pounds for her role as a mother of three in the movie Tully.
She told Ellen, “I did this, yes, but mothers do this every single day. They get pregnant, they gain all that weight, and it takes them a year and a half to lose it, and if they don’t, they get judged.”
Charlize explained that she felt a responsibility to gain the weight in order to play a mother of three who had just given birth.
When Ellen asked what she’d eaten to gain the pounds, Charlize admitted her “drug of choice” was potato chips, saying, “I ate them everywhere. I had a bag in my car, a bag in the bathroom, a bag in the kitchen, a bag on the counter, a bag in my trailer. Everywhere I went there was just a bag.”
However, she added that her high calorie diet took a toll on her health. “The hardest thing for me was I wasn’t prepared for how that amount of processed food will affect your mood,” she admitted. “I dealt with depression for the first time. What they say about ‘what you eat is who you are’ is so true… I was lethargic and tired all the time.”
And although she previously gained weight for her Oscar-winning role in the 2003 movie Monster, it was easier to lose the weight back then. “I was younger, I was 27, and I just didn’t snack for a week and was back into shape,” she told Ellen. “It was insane. That doesn’t happen anymore.”
Charlize, 42, revealed in a previous interview that it took her a year to lose the 50 pounds she gained for Tully, which debuts in theaters Friday, May 4, 2018. Check out the interview below. ~Alexandra Heilbron

Not everyone has a personal trainer Charlize, some women, if not most, keep on some residual weight after giving birth. Also, Having Children, is a badge of Honor. Anyone who judges a mother (Or anyone really) because of the shape of their body, is a POS.
She eats a ton of starches (sugar) and seed/processed oils (what the chips are baked in) and she blames fats for making her fat? I’m afraid her phrasing is all wrong. Those kinds of fats are bad… but blaming fats, in general, has gotten us to where we are health-wise. Saturated, mono-unsaturated, even polyunsaturated (omega-3) fats are not bad, they are indeed healthy and necessary… by making your diet mostly fat, you lose weight and reverse metabolic conditions such as type 2 diabetes.
Everyone relax..good god tharsos Charlize isnt reading this. Why is everyone so quick to bitch and moan all the time.

I judge people for the shape of their comments, and yes, Tharsos, you seemed to be what you call all the other judgers.
I think we should blame the directors for expecting a healthy person to gain 50 pounds for a movie especially if someone has to put the weight on quickly. How else can one put on that amount of weight. Shame on the movie moguls.
You dont need a personal trainer to lose baby weight. Eat right and exercise. We are all human. I have had 3.

I appreciate Charlize gaining the weight to portray a mother of 3. I also appreciated her empathy for moms both in her movie role and her interview. I did not hear one ounce of criticism from her as opposed to the responses which were harsh and unfairly critical.
Honestly, We need more portrayals like Charlize�s of just how hard it is to be a mother in a culture which has such unfair expectations of women, I.e. we must always be skinny, youthful and sexy to be noticed and to be worthy. Bravo Charlize!
