What happened to Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony?

After seven years of marriage Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony made a startling announcement that they’ve split. But was it really a surprise?
The couple released a joint statement Friday saying “We have decided to end our marriage. This was a very difficult decision. We have come to an amicable conclusion on all matters. It is a painful time for all involved,” the statement continues, “and we appreciate the respect of our privacy at this time.”
Lopez, 41, and Anthony, 42, married on June 2004 in a casual ceremony at Lopez’s Beverly Hills home. It was Lopez’s third marriage and Anthony’s second. (Lopez had been previously married to waiter Ojani Noa from February 1997 to January 1998 and dancer Cris Judd from September, 2001 to January, 2003 and Anthony was previously married to Dayanara Torres from May 2000 to June 2004.)
Speculation about their relationship came under fire when Lopez attended the BAFTA awards dinner – hosted by Prince William and his wife Duchess Catherine in Los Angeles – without Anthony.
Many are saying it is due to the couple’s busy schedules and with Lopez’s newfound fame from American Idol, the pair did not spend much time together. Adds Hollywood image consultant Michael Sands: “There was a road map that they weren’t getting along, and I don’t think there are any major surprises among people who have been following their careers,” he told USA Today. While New York attorney Stuart Slotnick says that Lopez and Anthony will more than likely keep things very quiet. “That coordination of a joint statement between celebrities usually indicates that they’re going to work together and keep it out of the public eye,” he told USA Today. “Jennifer Lopez does not want to have an ugly, prolonged, drawn-out divorce,” which would not be in the best interest of her image, he says. “She really is America’s new sweetheart… She doesn’t want to have a public fight.”
Lopez and Anthony share two children together, three-year-old twins Max and Emme.
