Wizard of Oz ruby red slippers go to auction

One of four known pairs of ruby red slippers worn by Judy Garland in the classic movie The Wizard of Oz are going to the highest bidder on December 16 as part of Profiles in History’s three-day “Icons of Hollywood” auction starting December 15, 2011. Another pair of slippers used in the movie is on exhibit at the Smithsonian Museum in Washington, while one pair is in a private collection. The remaining pair was stolen from the Judy Garland museum in Minnesota. The auction company’s president, Joe Maddalena, said the pair up for auction was originally found in the 1970s by a costume department worker on the MGM lot. They were sold at auction in 1988 to a private collector. They’re size 5 1/2, are marked #7 Judy Garland on the inside and the leather soles are painted red. They are in near-mint condition, with just light scuffs on the soles, so are believed to have been used in close ups when Dorothy clicks her heels together to get home. The shoes are estimated to bring in between $2 million and $3 million.
