Woman suing over Cohen’s new Bruno movie

brunoAnd the lawsuits begin again for Sacha Baron Cohen, who was sued by several people who’d participated in his movie, Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan. Now a woman claims she was injured so severely during filming of his new movie, Bruno, that she needs a wheelchair or cane to get around. Richelle Olson, 37, is seeking damages of more than $25,000. The incident took place in California, when Baron Cohen, posing as gay fashionista Bruno, was invited to participate in a bingo tournament to raise money for nursing students. Olson says when she tried to remove the microphone from Baron Cohen, who was using foul language while calling numbers, he pushed her over. She was then surrounded by cameramen who attacked her, while continuing to film. In legal documents, Olsen claims when she ran to get away from her attackers, she fainted, hitting her head and suffering bleeding in her brain. The lawsuit accuses Baron Cohen and Universal Pictures of assault, battery and fraudulent misrepresentation.

Can you say gold digger. Another reason to hate lawyers and people like Richelle. Get a real job Richelle. You knew what you were getting yourself into.

  2. tributegirl • June 5, 2009 @ 7:36 AM

With his movie Borat, apparently a lot of people did NOT know what they were getting into, some had no idea that they were being filmed for a movie. And these days, putting your hands on someone without permission is basically asking to be sued, so why would he push her over & have his people attack her and terrorize her like that? This is not the type of “artist” that I have any interest in supporting.

  3. MV • June 5, 2009 @ 10:05 AM

SBC is a moron. His movies are terrible and inappropriate. His stunt on MTV awards was ridiculous and not funny at all. I hope that nobody supports this moron.

Richelle Olson, 37, is seeking damages of more than “$25,000”

    haha Underachiever!

I like Cohen, especially the old Ali G shows. I don’t think I laughed so hard in years.

  5. Ernie • June 5, 2009 @ 10:50 AM

    Cohen is a comedic genius!

Richelle is a fat, greedy churcher.

Good for him to put people like that in their place.

  6. Arnold • June 5, 2009 @ 12:33 PM

Cohen sucks. If any part of this is true…take it all Richelle!!!

  7. demigod • June 5, 2009 @ 12:40 PM

He’s a riot! The Ali G show was great..Borat had me in stitches.

  8. mandee • June 5, 2009 @ 12:54 PM

im surprised at all the comments that are AGAINST this injured woman. are any of you honestly telling me if a celebrity AND their camera crew attacked you and gave you these type of injuries (one being permanent) that you would NOT sue?!?! perhaps the ONLY reason she is suing for so little is because she only wants/needs the money for the medical bills and to cover the cost of her cane and wheelchair? im sure if shes suing she has legal documentation by the doctor(s?) that checked her out and can prove the extent of her injuries. if you ask me, cohen is a sick jerk that deserves to go to jail if its true how this went down. i wouldnt find the humor in anyone attacking someone that didnt do something to warrant it (example, attacking you first, or your kid, or trying to murder you, rape you, etc). i will not ever see any of his movies. and not just because of this. shame on those of you that pretend you wouldnt do the same (even if the injuries werent as bad as reported, we all know that ANY ONE given the chance would be a gold digger)

I’m not against her. I just think that since this happened in the US, the comment about her seeking more than “25,000” seems kind of funny. And you are certainly right about the gold digger comments – I would definitely be going for more!

  10. Monique • June 5, 2009 @ 4:26 PM

I’d be going for more too – $25.000 seems a little low.

  11. mandee • June 5, 2009 @ 4:28 PM

  13. B • June 5, 2009 @ 5:31 PM

I have never seen anything he has done. Only heard about it ,which was enough for me. That stunt at the MVA’s was stupid …but this is all another stunt to generate free publicity no doubt…$25,000 that is a riot she must be Canadian! No American would shoot so low!

  14. Jo-Anne • June 5, 2009 @ 6:03 PM

am not a Borat fan, however purchased Ali G series, I find it extremely funny…

if Richelle suffered through negligence of Cohen or others associated with the filming of this movie, then she deserves to recover damages, costs. If it’s proven she’s got nothing on them…she deserves nothing…time will tell…

  15. STEVE-O • June 5, 2009 @ 6:19 PM

I think this movie is going to be fricking great! If all the hilarity that is going to grace the screen comes at the expense of some whiner then I say I am all for it! She should consider herself lucky that she is now “famous” and can make her rounds on the talk shows, like Tyra and Maury. Put her right next to the dancing, drunky, midget clown! Hahaha! Oh…my sides hurt laughing at this woman’s “pain”.

  16. Coop • June 5, 2009 @ 7:39 PM

Loosen up people it’s a joke!I think Coen’s great and if he comes across a tad bit unsettling to some it’s because his humour probes some of their off-kilter often archaic perspectives of the world .This woman is just like many featured in the first film, she was probably left with egg on her face and is looking for a way to cash in.

  18. Carol • June 5, 2009 @ 8:20 PM

well, she shouldn’t have tried to take the microphone from him to begin with. If you don’t like the situation, leave, very simple, but she shouldn’t have been pushed. Borat was one of the stupidist movies ever, in my opinion. If she is going to agree to participate in such fundraisers, she really needs to know who will be taking part. Patricia Heaton (I think that’s how you spell it) left an award show because she didn’t like the “direction” the show was going, and I think that made a stronger statement then if she would’ve gone on stage and tried to take over. The woman certainly didn’t use her head on this one. Does she deserve to be awarded damages? I’m conflicted on this one.

It takes an idiot to be able to understand exactly what was meant by “over 25,00”
Most people relate to “at least” giving you a ballpark figure. But it takes a bigger idiot to reference theft over as an example for a civil lawsuit.

  20. mandee • June 5, 2009 @ 9:27 PM

anon, i would definitely be asking for MORE than 25 000 if i was injure by a celeb, i may even ask for an entire million if i was permanently stuck with a cane or a wheelchair because of it, so i can see your point 🙂 carol, if the fundraiser was richelles and she didnt like the way he was using foul language (when the people in the audience or whatever were nursing students) then i think she had the right to change her mind and try to take the microphone. as long as she didnt touch him, he AND his camera crew shouldnt have put their hands on her. thats why i think she deserves the money (if this claim is true and she has proof from the doctor(s) she saw). she shouldnt have taken the mic youre right, but i guess it depends on the situation?

  21. Anon • June 6, 2009 @ 12:41 AM

    mandee on June 5, 2009 9:27 PM
I think your right thar she may have been the bingo organizer and had every right to take the mike away. She does go on to say that he misrepresented who he was and we really dont know what her role was there.

  22. tributegirl • June 6, 2009 @ 10:43 AM

Olson organized a charity bingo event, to raise funds for nursing students. The majority of the people there were seniors. Olson was contacted by someone about having a celebrity call the numbers, which she agreed to (who wouldn’t?), but apparently she didn’t know which celebrity it would be (who would ever think it would be him?). He showed up dressed as his newest character, and when he started swearing like crazy, that’s when she tried to get the mic from him. Totally planned on his part, totally unexpected on her part. He’s an a$$, and I hope she takes him to the cleaners.

  23. K • June 6, 2009 @ 12:09 PM

As it states, B: “damages of more than 25,000”..and if your ignorant enough to think that she’s Canadian because she’s only asking for that much, you obviously have never been to Canada and are one of those dumb ignorant f*cks who think all Canadians live in igloos and keep penguins as pets..at least we dont sue each for our own idiot mistakes..read a book dumbass!!!!!

All of you should not jump to the gun so quick, your only told what the media put out. None of you were there and really knows what happened, relax and have a beer or something. peace

  27. Carol • June 7, 2009 @ 9:36 AM

I have worked with fundraisers, and maybe it was an error on her part, or his, but shouldn’t you know who is doing the MC’ing and let them know who the group is that will be listening to this person? Just with the little write up and the comments provided, I think there was negligence on both parts, but no one should ever put their hands on someone else. She may have a hard time getting any money on this one because there are a lot of “if’s” here.

  28. bubbles • June 7, 2009 @ 12:10 PM

She’s suing for $25,000 after suffering brain damage? Talk about low ambitions.

Though this might help her prove her case.

If you’ve had the opportunity to watch Cohen at his finest in the Ali G episodes, you would see that he was able to fool the best of them….

Former head of the Immigration and Naturalization Service James Ziglar
President of the US Olympians Association John Naber
    Pat Buchanan
Former U.S. Secretary of State James Baker and former White House Press Secretary Marlin Fitzwater
    Ralph Nader
    Former astronaut Dr. Buzz Aldrin
    Newt Gingrich
Former U.S. National Security Advisor General Brent Scowcroft
Former U.S. Attorney General Dick Thornburgh
human rights activist and environmental campaigner, Anita Roddick .just to mention a few

So, if he was able to make a mockery of the above and pull those off, fooling some nursing student in her little fundraising bingo doesnt reflect incompetence, lack of research or negligence on her part.

I miss miss watching those episodes!!!!!

This woman’s allegations sound a little bit ridiculous. If she was actualy injured, she should be compensated, but her whole story sounds a little elaborate and fallacious to me.

  33. tributegirl • June 7, 2009 @ 8:02 PM

Rick Mercer was also able to fool some “high rollers” in his “Talking with Americans” segment, which was hilarious.

love Rick Mercer too, funny guy

  36. John • June 8, 2009 @ 3:59 AM

As much as I like it when folks get pranked I don’t find what Cohen does funny.

I would like to see a doc about the people that have lost their jobs or are otherwise affected by his antics.

If you’ve seen the trailer you know he crashes a fashion event in Milan I think it was. You have to know that someone there lost their job over that. That company spends thousands of dollars to promote their work and the only thing people talk about the next day is that the Borat guy wrecked it.

Same with this lady, someone tries to raise funds for nursing students. He sneaks in and ruins the event and thats supposed to be funny. Whether or not she was actually injured or not the event was ruined and the money that was supposed to go to help others isn’t there.

Worst of it all is that he manages to get everyone to sign waivers first off. So they can’t sue and win later on. His crews tell them its since they are taping him but he only starts acting like you see on the film after they sign.

You might say they are stupid for signing them, but if you had invited him to help out with your event, he showed up, was polite and respectful and nothing like you see on film then I bet you would sign it too.

Then when he acted like a jackass like you see, folks would say that it was your own fault for being suckered in.

I hope he does lose the lawsuit and I hope she gets alot more than $25,000.

  37. tributegirl • June 8, 2009 @ 1:58 PM

    John, I couldn’t agree more.
Gina & Jo, I love Rick Mercer, now he’s funny, this Cohen guy is just a jerk.
