Zootopia is the new record breaker at weekend box office

The reign of Deadpool has finally ended, folks. And the seemingly impossible feat was accomplished by…drum roll, please…Disney’s Zootopia! The animated comedy, with its hefty $73.7 million haul this weekend, is Walt Disney Animation Studio’s largest three-day opening ever, and has also officially broken The Loraxs 2012 record as the biggest March opening for an animated feature. The flick about a crime-solving bunny is clearly a fan favorite among moviegoers, as well as Tribute.ca users, who gave it a solid 3.8 stars.

The first of two Gerard Butler-starring flicks in theaters this weekend, London Has Fallen, opened at a very distant second with $21.7 million. The action sequel, which has Aaron Eckhart back as the POTUS and Morgan Freeman as his trusty VP, can safely call itself the champ here at Tribute.ca, however, with our users awarding it an impressive 4.8 stars.

After holding onto the top spot for three weeks in a row, Deadpool has now fallen to third, raking in $16.4 million this weekend. This is a big drop compared to previous weekends, but the Ryan Reynolds antihero comedy isn’t down for the count just yet — it’s fast approaching over $650 million in worldwide box office earnings. And with over 750 votes, and a 3.8 star rating, it’s still got many fans here at Tribute.ca, as well.

Funny lady Tina Fey‘s Whiskey Tango Foxtrot made a quiet debut with just $7.6 million. And although it under-performed at this weekend’s box office, the political comedy more than made up for it with a very strong 4.2 star rating from Tribute.ca’s users.

Gods of Egypt, also starring Butler alongside Game of Thrones’ Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, dropped from second to fifth, earning only $5 million. As of this weekend, the mythological epic has taken in just under $50 million worldwide (only about a third of its whopping $140 million budget), as well as 3.3 stars from Tribute.ca users.
