It must be tough being a film actor for as long as Paul Sorvino has been one and watching your daughter (Mira) win an Oscar after only two years in film. But papa Sorvino didn't even want to really be an actor. He wanted to be an opera singer. However, after 18 years of vocal lessons failed to pay off with a job at the Met, the Brooklyn, New York, native finally conceeded that acting was his calling.

About his craft, Sorvino says: "You do lots of hard work and practise and then all of a sudden one day the character enters you like a possession -- it's as if you've put on a coat and it fits perfectly. If a community theatre actor goes through the exact same steps that I do, has the same research attitude and interest in the subject, when we both finish, mine will be a person, and his will be something nice for community theatre."

In addition to singing and acting, Sorvino is a talented painter and sculptor. He has been married and divorced twice, and has three children from his first marriage. In 2001 he won a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Ft. Lauderdale International Film Festival and in 2003, received an Outstanding Achievement Award from the Los Angeles Italian Film Awards.
