Brit Marling biography
The OA (Netflix)
Date of Birth: August 7, 1982
Brittany Marling was born in Chicago, Illinois. Her parents were both real estate developers and as a result, Marling lived in various parts of the United States during her childhood. Although she was always fond of acting, her parents encouraged her to focus on academics instead. She eventually graduated with a joint degree in Economics and Media Arts from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.
During her post-secondary education, she met fellow film enthusiasts Mike Cahill and Zal Batmanglij and together they explored the world of filmmaking. Their first project together was the documentary Boxers and Ballerinas. Despite her love of film, Brit interned for a summer with global investment banking firm Goldman Sachs and was offered a job there. She declined the position in order to pursue an acting career and promptly moved to Los Angeles.
After turning down various minor roles, she decided that the only way to find good roles was to create them herself. She started work on two movies: Another Earth with Cahill and Sound of My Voice with Batmanglij. She co-wrote, produced and acted in the films, which both opened at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival. Brit was the first female writer/actress to have two films open at Sundance at once and she immediately received attention. She was nominated for and won various awards at Sundance and other film festivals, especially for After Earth . At Sundance, Brit met Robert Redford, who offered her a role in his film The Company You Keep . The movie offered her the chance to star alongside many Hollywood greats including Stanley Tucci, Nick Nolte, Susan Sarandon and Chris Cooper.
Since then, Brit's career has taken off. For her next film, The East , she once again teamed up with Batmanglij, who directed and co-wrote the screenplay. Brit not only co-wrote and produced, but stars in the film alongside Alexander Skarsgård, Ellen Page, Julia Ormond and Patricia Clarkson.
