Dylan O'Brien is of Irish, Italian, English and Spanish descent. He spent his first 12 years in Union Country, New Jersey before moving with his family to Hermosa Beach, California. He planned to attend film school to become a cinematographer like his father, but once he landed a role as Stiles on the MTV TV series Teen Wolf, he left school to further his acting career. The show was a hit and Dylan stayed with it for all six seasons from 2011 to 2017, while landing roles in movies during his down time.
Dylan's movie debut was playing Jimmy on High Road (2011), a completely improvised comedy about a young man who ends up getting into trouble after a drug deal goes wrong.
He also played roles in two TV shorts and the indie film The First Time (2012). In the comedy The Internship (2013) alongside Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn, he played Stuart.
The following year, when he played the starring role in the dystopian film The Maze Runner (2014), his fame skyrocketed. The film was so successful that a sequel, titled Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials (2015), was ordered, in which Dylan reprised his role. However, when shooting the third film in the franchise, Maze Runner: The Death Cure (2018), Dylan suffered a serious accident during a stunt gone wrong and was hospitalized. The movie, which was delayed, was an instant box office success when it was released in 2018. He has also been seen in a supporting role alongside Mark Wahlberg and Kurt Russell in the true-story epic Deepwater Horizon (2016), and played the starring role in the action-packed drama American Assassin (2017). , as well as in his starring role as Stiles Stilinski on Teen Wolf.
Dylan has also played drums in a band called Slow Kids At Play.
