Born in The Bronx, New York, Kerry Washington graduated from The George Washington University's theater program in 1998. Her feature debut was a lead role in the award-winning indie film, Our Song (2000). Next, she starred opposite Julia Stiles and Sean Patrick Thomas in Save The Last Dance (2001), for which she won a Teen Choice Award for Best Breakout Performance.
Washington has also been seen in Bad Company (2002) starring Chris Rock and Sir Anthony Hopkins; The Human Stain (2003) opposite Nicole Kidman and Hopkins; The United States of Leland (2003) with Ryan Gosling and Kevin Spacey; Ray (2005) starring Jamie Foxx, The Last King of Scotland (2006) starring Forest Whitaker, For Colored Girls (2010) and A Thousand Words (2012). More recently, she appeared in Peeples (2013), the TV movie Confirmation (2016), for which she earned nominations at the SAG Awards, Emmys and Golden Globes, and lent her voice to the animated flick Cars 3 (2017).
Kerry is perhaps best known for her work as lead character Olivia Pope in Shonda Rhimes' drama series Scandal, which began airing in 2012. For her performance, she has been nominated for a Golden Globe, a SAG Award, and two Emmys.
In her spare time, Kerry is an active supporter of the Creative Coalition, a group dedicated to raising awareness of First Amendment Rights and support of arts in education and a new program called Adopt-A-Classroom in New York City.
