Surf's Up

Mario Cantone

Date of Birth: December 9, 1959

Born in Boston, Massachusetts, comedian/actor Mario Cantone is the son of restaurateurs. He attended Emerson College in Boston and got his start hosting the New York children's TV show, Steampipe Alley (1987).

A short man with a high voice, his stand up comedy act includes impersonations, or as he likes to call it, "characterizations" of celebrities such as Liza Minnelli, Peggy Lee, Jim Morrison, Bruce Springsteen and Judy Garland.

In film and on television, he has played a range of characters, from mobsters, as in the crime comedy Who Do I Gotta Kill? (1994), starring Sandra Bullock and Vincente Pastore, to a wedding planner with attitude on the hit series Sex and the City.

On TV, Cantone's comedy performances have been featured on HBO Comedy Showcase, Premium Blend (1997), and his own specials: Comedy Central Presents: Mario Cantone (1999) and Mario Cantone: Laugh Whore (2005).

Off screen, Cantone has performed his stand up comedy at venues such as Carnegie Hall, Resorts Atlantic City and Caroline's on Broadway. An accomplished stage actor as well, he has appeared on and off-Broadway in a number of plays, including Love! Valor! Compassion! and The Tempest.

With his unique voice, Cantone is a popular choice for animated films, having voiced characters in Farce of the Penguins (2006) and Surf's Up (2007). He also reprised his role as Anthony Marantino, in the movie adaptation Sex and the City (2008) and Sex and the City 2 (2010).
