What Keeps You Alive

Martha MacIsaac

Date of Birth: October 11, 1984

Canadian actress Martha MacIsaac was born in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. She made a splash there when she became featured on the Government of PEI tourism brochures and "Come play on my Island" television commercials. She also played the role of Tiny Tim onstage in Charlottetown in a professional production.

She shot to stardom (well, as much as anyone can in Canada) when she was chosen to star as the orphan Emily Byrd Starr on Emily of New Moon, very loosely based on the books by L.M. Montgomery. When the series finished, she concentrated on her schooling, then moved to Toronto, where she landed roles in various projects, including television movies such as This Time Around (2003), Suburban Madness (2004), I Do, They Don't (2005), Night of Terror (2006), and In God's Country (2007). During that time she also made her feature film acting debut in the Disney movie Ice Princess (2005) and appeared onstage with the Soulpepper Theatre Company.

In 2007 Martha taped an audition for the hit teen comedy Superbad to send to its creators. Months later, having somewhat forgotten about the tape, she received a call asking her to come to Los Angeles for a screen test. She got the part of Becca, the object of desire of the co-star, fellow Canadian Michael Cera. She was excited about the move, as it was something she had always wanted, and she had a lot of friends who were already living there. Her parents were supportive as well, joking that as long as she didn't get into drugs, they were okay with it.

MacIsaac does the voice of Melosa in the animated Canadian TV series Di-Gata Defendors and also stars in The Thaw, a sci-fi horror film about the fearful discoveries made by ecology students in the remote Arctic.
