Date of Birth: March 12, 1949
Born in Cornwall, New York, Cohen took a golden opportunity to help direct
the telefilm Silent Night, Lonely Night, while completing his studies at
University. Degree in hand, Cohen moved to Los Angeles to become a reader
International Famous Agency.
After moving to Fox Television, Cohen became a director specializing in
television movies. By the mid-1970s he made his move into the motion picture
industry by producing a number of projects including Mahogany,
The Wiz and the picturesque baseball comedy The Bingo Long Travelling All-Stars and
Kings (1976). By the end of the '70s Cohen had created his own production
company which continued to produce films like The Witches of Eastwick
and The Running Man , as well as television shows until the late
With a strong foothold in the producer's chair, Cohen turned to directing
on his own. Starting with A Small Circle of Friends in 1980, and
Scandalous (his first screenplay) four years later, he turned back to the small screen
to direct two hit series, Miami Vice and Thirtysomething. He
returned to the big screen in the early '90s to complete three big films,
all of which fared well at the box office.
In 1998, he was honoured with multiple Emmy nominations for his telefilm,
The Rat Pack, before venturing off to complete two more thriller
features, The Skulls (2000) and The Fast and the Furious (2001).
In 2005 he was given the ShoWest award as Director of the Year.
