Margaret (Nicole Kidman) has moved to Hong Kong with her husband and three children due to her husband's job transfer. After a year there, she's ready to return to the United States, when her husband informs her he's had a promotion and needs to stay another year.
Another American, Hilary (Sarayu Blue), also lives in Hong Kong for work-related reasons. The two are best friends and when Margaret's young son goes missing from a night-time market, Hilary tries to support her friend. When the police inform Margaret that often kidnappings are conducted by family members and friends, Margaret points the police in the direction of Hilary's husband, David (Jack Huston), who's so shaken by the accusation and Hilary's hesitation when she's asked about David's possible involvement, that it threatens their marriage.
