SilverCity Riverport Cinemas
Appropriately located on a street known as Entertainment Boulevard, the Riverport cinema was one of the first Silvercity theatres in Canada, opening in 1997. Located southeast of Vancouver along the middle arm of the Fraser River, the theatre expanded from 12 screens to 19 (including an IMAX auditorium) in 1998. As the only theatre in Richmond, B.C., there are more than 4,500 avilable seats, enough to house one in every forty city inhabitants. Staying true to the high rate of immigration—close to 60% of Richmond consists of immigrants, the highest rate in the country—there is the occassional foreign-language release showing. The theatre became the first Famous Players theatre to have an IMAX theatre with 3D capability, and in 2002, the Silvercity became the first theatre in Canada to install digital projection.
