Cineplex Cinemas Vaughan
Thirty million is a pretty large budget to make a film with, but that was the construction cost of this massive, intergalactic-designed cinema off Highways 400 and 7 in Northwestern Toronto. The Colossus has a UFO “mothership” on the roof that flashes light that can be seen from anywhere in the Woodbridge region, including the lobby of the AMC 30 situated just across the highway. The space-themed décor includes such cool designs as green martian ATM machines and framed Star Trek memorabilia around the lobby (not to mention model spaceships hung from the ceiling). With 19 gigantic, curved, THX-equpped screens, including a six-story IMAX auditoriums, and a fully licensed lounge (The Pod) offering alcoholic drinks, there is plenty of entertainment to go around. The space theme was appropriate for its time— the theatre opened in February 1999 on the same weekend as Disney’s My Favourite Martian, and a few months before Star Wars: Episode 1 was released—and still has that funky look today.
