Free festival wrap party tonight

eclectic methodTIFF's free closing-night party in Yonge-Dundas Square features the infectious improvised audiovisual mashups of Eclectic Method. For the party, the renowned trio will thrill film and music lovers with a video remix set incorporating clips from the films included inĀ The Essential 100, a TIFF list of the 100 best films ever. "We're going to do a big blitz of all The Essential 100 to kick-start it, with just pure movies, and then go into a more usual Eclectic Method set," Ian Edgar told The Star. "Yeah, it's going to be a little artier than we usually are, and really with some of the more serious stuff (films), it's a bit harder, because we're usually sort of lighthearted and goofy about what we do," added Jonny Wilson. "But we can always find stuff. For instance, it's like if someone claps in the movie, it doesn't matter what movie it is, we'll use it."

"Or gunshots. We can have a lot of fun with those," offered Geoff Gamlen. Although the video clips and sounds are chosen in advance, the final cut is improvised live on the spot at the event. This particular performance will also incorporate Public Enemy's Chuck D, who's hosting the evening, and Clyde Stubblefield, former drummer for James Brown. Gamlen says, "We normally don't rehearse, but this time we're going to have a few run throughs with Chuck D and Clyde Stubblefield." The show begins at 9:00 p.m.

Prior to that, at 7:00 p.m. is the free premiere of a new documentary by Benjamin Franzen and Kembrew McLeo called Copyright Criminals, that takes a look at the history of music sampling and how technology has changed and improved the art.
