TIFF buzzes about Portman, Black Swan

TIFF-goers are raving about Black Swan and Natalie Portman after the film’s star-studded Canadian premiere Monday night at Roy Thomson Hall, with many tipping both the film and actress as Oscar hopefuls next year.

The film, directed by Darren Aronofsky of The Wrestler fame, is a psychological thriller centering on a New York City ballerina (played by Portman) whose rivalry with a fellow dancer evolves into a twisted friendship, resulting in a recklessness that threatens to destroy her.

As reported last night, Portman met with a fan frenzy at Roy Thomson Hall when she arrived for the premiere, greeting hundreds of fans and signing autographs on her way into the screening, while the anticipation around the film was evident as the rush line stretched around the block.

Joining Portman on the red carpet were Winona Ryder, Barbara Hershey, Vincent Cassel and director Darren Aronofsky, while Rachel Weisz was also reportedly spotted, as was Emmanuelle Chriqui.

A steamy love scene in the film between stars Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis has been much buzzed about, with Reuters calling the scene, as well as elements of violence and horror in the movie “a departure from clean-cut on-screen roles often associated with Portman.”

On Twitter following last night’s premiere, TIFF filmgoers called Black Swan “a real tour de force”, amazing and a “masterpiece”, with several tweeters saying they expect Portman to be nominated for Best Actress at next year’s Oscars.

The film is set to be released in theatres this December.
