One elephant is killed every 15 minutes. In the last five years, 150,000 elephants have been slaughtered for the sole purpose of obtaining their ivory. If the senseless, merciless murder of African elephants continues, they will be extinct in 15 years.
These alarming figures form the basis of a new Netflix documentary called The Ivory Game. Directed by Kief Davidson and Richard Ladkani - and produced by Leonardo DiCaprio - the film tracks the atrocity of elephant poaching across eight countries and in a brutally honest fashion, depicts the animals as a species under severe duress.
As haunting and heartrending as the documentary is, it intimately and tenderly features the majestic elephants in all their glory. The viewer is granted access to the beautiful creatures and witnesses the depths of their despair upon discovering countless carcasses of their own kind. They experience visible grief and demonstrate an understanding of the savagery being carried out against them. Elephants have learned the value of their ivory, and now attempt to hide their tusks from approaching humans.
The film presents elephant poaching as a critical and urgent issue in dire need of resolution. It traces the situation back to China, where the ivory trade flourishes and fuels the killing of elephants. But rather than leave the audience eviscerated in a state of hopelessness, the film inspires action. Kief and Richard's documentary tells a tale that the world needs to hear, and helps ignite a spark that will ideally end the ivory game.
I sat down with Kief and Richard during TIFF to explore the film in detail. The directors discussed the inspiration for the film, the dangers and challenges they encountered while shooting it, how Leonardo became involved, and what their attachment to the topic might lead to next.
Stay tuned to Tribute.ca for the full Q&A, which will be published to coincide with the documentary's November 4, 2016 release on Netflix.
The Ivory Game had its international premiere on Saturday, Sept. 10 as part of TIFF's Docs program. It also screened on Monday, Sept. 12, and will screen again on Friday, Sept. 16 at 9:30 a.m. at Scotiabank Theatre. ~Matthew Pariselli
