TIFF 2023 debuts despite SAG/AFTRA strike

The Toronto International Film Festival 2023 debuted today, and while there may not be as many celebrities to watch this year, there's still plenty to do and many movies to watch, with more than 200 feature films screening during the festival.

Tonight's opening film is Hayao Miyazaki’s animated The Boy and the Heron, which debuts at 6 p.m. at the Princess of Wales Theatre, then screens again at 8 p.m. at Roy Thomson Hall.

Tomorrow, Nickelback will perform a free concert outside on the Festival Street music stage to promote the premiere of their TIFF Gala Presentation, the documentary Hate to Love: Nickelback, which premieres at 2 p.m. Friday at Royal Thomson Hall.

TIFF's Cinema Park at David Pecaut Square will present a free screening each night at 10 p.m. of films of some of the talent in TIFF 2023 Official Selection films, including The Spiderwick Chronicles, Batman, Contact, Superman III, Pee-Wee's Big Adventure, Rocky, Addams Family Values and Clueless.

Some celebrities who will be arriving in Toronto to greet the fans and media include Viggo Mortensen, Sean Penn, Willem Dafoe and Nicolas Cage.
