Kendra Ellis-Connor (Kerry Washington) goes to a police station when her son Jamal doesn't come home one night. Rookie officer Paul Larkin (Jeremy Jordan) begins to ask Kendra more about her son, but his questions seem racist. Larkin is unable to give Kendra any details about the investigation until a lieutenant arrives. At this point, Kendra’s estranged husband Scott Connor (Steven Pasquale) arrives at the station. Tensions rise between the family and the police due to their lack of understanding about being a Black American, as well as between Kendra and Scott.
