When Viserys Targaryen (Paddy Considine) names his daughter Rhaenyra Targaryen (Milly Alcock) as the successor to his throne, this becomes the catalyst for The Targaryen civil war. His brother, Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith) believes that he is entitled to the throne after Visery's death. Daemon challenges his niece's claim, as a woman has never sat on the Iron Throne. The series is set 200 years before the events on Game of Thrones.
