In August of 1819 a team of 21 men set out on the New England whaling ship Essex in an attempt to learn more about the world. In winter 1820, the ship was assaulted by something no one could believe: a whale of mammoth size and will, and an almost human sense of vengeance. The real-life maritime disaster went on to inspire Herman Melville's classic novel, Moby-Dick.
This film details the harrowing aftermath of the attack, as the panicked team is stranded for 90 days, thousands of miles from home. Captain Owen Chase (Chris Hemsworth) must lead his team as they are paralyzed with fear and hungry with desire to kill the whale.
