Theo (Kevin Bacon) asks his wife Susanna (Amanda Seyfried) for a much-needed getaway with their daughter, Ella. They rent a gorgeous countryside house and are in awe of the place. One night, Ella sees a shadow of a man, but Theo dismisses her concern. However, the house begins to puzzle Theo, as he finds extra light switches and notices a discrepancy in the house's size once he measures it. Somebody or something lurks in the shadows of the house and gives them the titular warning "You Should Have Left."
