James Cameron confirms Avatar sequels release dates

Sequels to James Cameron‘s visual epic Avatar have been much anticipated since its 2009 release, and now fans can mark their calendars with the release dates for the next four installments.

20th Century Fox and Lightstorm Entertainment recently announced the dates via the official Avatar facebook page: “Avatar takes flight as we begin concurrent production on four sequels. The journey continues December 18, 2020, December 17, 2021, December 20, 2024 and December 19, 2025!”

Originally, Avatar 2 was supposed to hit theaters in 2018, but for writer and director James Cameron, the series is a giant project and it has to be done right.

Currently in Orlando to prepare for the launch of the estimated $500-million Pandora: The World of Avatar at Disney World in Orlando this May, he spoke with The Toronto Star about the upcoming movie installments, saying, “What people have to understand is that this is a cadence of releases. So we’re not making Avatar 2. We’re making Avatar 2, 3, 4 and 5. It’s an epic undertaking… I know where I’m going to be for the next eight years of my life… we have to preserve a certain amount of showmanship and we’re going to draw that curtain when the time is right.”

It truly is a massive undertaking. It took James four-and-a-half years to make the first film and now he is making another four. It will no doubt push back his possible work with other films. Recently, it was mentioned that James could be returning to the Terminator franchise as a producer, but with his work on the Avatar sequels taking priority, it seems that won’t be for a long time.
