The Quebec drama about a widowed mother struggling to raise her violent son took home nine awards, including Best Motion Picture. Xavier Dolan won for Direction, Original Screenplay and Editing. Antoine Olivier Pilon won Actor in a Leading Role, Anne Dorval won Actress in a Leading Role and Suzanne Clément won Actress in a Supporting Role. Mommy also picked up awards for Achievement in Make-Up (Maina Militza) and Cinematography (André Turpin).
Another big winner for the night was Pompeii. The Toronto-shot historical disaster film took home awards for Costume Design, Visual Effects, Art Direction, Sound Editing and Overall Sound. Pompeii also won the Golden Screen Award for Best Feature Film. The award is given to the highest-grossing theatrical release in Canada.
Fan favorite Orphan Black took home the award for Best Drama Series and Tatiana Maslany won Best Lead Actress in a Drama for her role in the series. Her co-star Jordan Gavaris also won, for Best Supporting Actor in a Drama.
Nicolas Billon picked up the award for Best Adapted Screenplay for the drama Elephant Song – about a psychiatrist who gets pulled into an intricate mind game with a mentally disturbed patient, played by Xavier Dolan.
John Cusack took home the award for Actor in a Supporting Role for his part in Maps to the Stars. His co-star in the film, Julianne Moore, was in the audience and though she didn’t win, she did present an award.
