Oblivion destroys box office competition

Tom Cruise’s new sci-fi thriller Oblivion destroyed the box office competition in its opening weekend, bringing in $38.2 million over three days. It’s the fifth biggest North American opening for a Cruise movie behind several installations of the Mission Impossible franchise and the sci-fi horror movie War of the Worlds. Oblivion, which has a Tribute user rating of 3.8/5 stars, has so far taken in $150.2 million worldwide. Meanwhile, 42, the Jackie Robinson biopic, which nabbed first place last week, fell to second with $18 million. It has a high Tribute user rating of 4.5/5 stars. The Croods stayed at third this week with $9.5 million and a user rating of 4.5 stars. The family film passed the $400 million milestone worldwide and continues to find success in theaters despite opening five weeks ago.

Scary Movie 5, which has a Tribute user rating of 3.3 stars, dropped from second to fourth and made $6.3 million at the box office this weekend, increasing its total over two weeks to just $22.9 million. G.I. Joe: Retaliation slipped to 5th with $5.8 million but it’s still performing well overseas and has so far earned $322.9 million worldwide. The action flick, starring Dwayne Johnson, currently has a Tribute user rating of 3.5/5. Rounding out the top ten were: The Place Beyond the Pines, Olympus Has Fallen, Evil Dead, Jurassic Park 3D, and Oz The Great and Powerful. ~Cassie Jasinski
