Pretty Woman director Garry Marshall dies at 81

Famed writer-director-producer Garry Marshall has died at the age of 81. As his publicist Michelle Bega revealed through a statement, he passed away from complications with pneumonia following a stroke at a Burbank, California hospital on Tuesday.

Garry is best known for creating the highly popular ’70s shows Mork & Mindy and Happy Days, and directing the hit films Pretty Woman and Beaches.

He got his start in the business in the late ’50s, and although he’s primarily known for his directing and producing gigs, he has also worked as an actor.

Off set, Garry was considered by many to be a warm and kindhearted soul. His inviting personality might explain why several Hollywood A-listers repeatedly took parts in his films. Julia Roberts and Kate Hudson are two prime examples.

Julia became a household name with 1990’s Pretty Woman, and again teamed up with Garry in Runaway Bride, Valentine’s Day and this year’s Mother’s Day.

Kate starred in the 2004 rom-com Raising Helen, which Garry directed, and acted alongside Julia in Mother’s Day.

Other famous works of Garry’s include the shows The Odd Couple and Laverne & Shirley, and the films The Princess Diaries and Overboard.

Garry, who was born in The Bronx, graduated from Northwestern University.

Nominated for five Emmys, he is survived by his wife Barbara Sue Marshall, whom he was married to for 53 years, as well as his two sisters (including director-producer-actress Penny Marshall), three children and six grandchildren.
