The Hobbit No. 1 at box office

After months of anticipation, Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey debuted at number one at the weekend box office, raking in an impressive $84.7 million. Receiving a high 4.5 out of a possible 5 stars from Tribute.ca users, Sir Ian McKellen returns as Gandalf the Wizard and Martin Freeman stars as the lovable Hobbit Bilbo Baggins in this adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s 1937 novel. Peter Ramsey’s animated feature Rise of the Guardians comes in second, making $7.4 million during its fourth weekend in theaters. Featuring celebrity voices like Alec Baldwin and Hugh Jackman, this holiday film holds a favorable 4.3 star rating. Steven Spielberg’s historical drama Lincoln comes in third place, making $7.2 million for its 6th week in theaters. Starring Daniel Day-Lewis as the 16th president of the United States and Sally Field as his first lady Mary Todd, Lincoln maintains a high 4.5 star rating. Also in its 6th week in theaters is Sam MendesSkyfall, which falls to fourth place, making $7 million. Starring Daniel Craig as 007, Skyfall maintains its 4 star rating.
