Radioactive has been chosen as the Closing Night Gala film. Directed by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Marjane Satrapi, the biopic follows the life and legacy of two-time Nobel Prize-winning scientist Marie Curie. The film, which stars Rosamund Pike as Marie Curie, will make its world premiere at Roy Thomson Hall on September 14.
The Opening Night Gala film, which was announced last week, is Once Were Brothers: Robbie Robertson and the Band, a documentary about Canadian rock group The Band. Some of the other highly anticipated titles include Western Stars, starring Bruce Springsteen; the Judy Garland biopic Judy starring Renée Zellweger; and Joker, a dark spin on the Batman villain starring Joaquin Phoenix in the titular role.
The 18 Galas and 38 Special Presentations include films by Taika Waititi, Marielle Heller, James Mangold, Rian Johnson, John Crowley, Atom Egoyan, Noah Baumbach and Steven Soderbergh. Of the Gala films announced today, half of the titles are directed or co-directed by women. This year’s films also includes 29 World Premieres, six International Premieres, 13 North American Premieres, and eight Canadian Premieres.
