Co-heads Cameron Bailey and Joana Vicente announced today the four actors who are TIFF’s next generation of Canadian Rising Stars.
They include: Kacey Rohl, a Vancouver native who stars in the feature film White Lie, making its World Premiere at TIFF 2019. She is currently shooting the TV series Fortunate Son.
Montreal-based actor Mikhaïl Ahooja stars in The Twentieth Century, which is making its World Premiere at TIFF 2019.
Montreal-born Nahéma Ricci stars as the title role in Antigone, which is also making its World Premiere at TIFF 2019.
Finally, Toronto-born Shamier Anderson has played opposite Nicole Kidman in Destroyer and Johnny Depp in City of Lies and appears in Endings, Beginnings, which is premiering at TIFF 2019. Anderson and his younger brother Stephan James co-founded the B.L.A.C.K. Ball, an event hosted in Toronto during TIFF and in Los Angeles during Oscars season.
Joana Vicente was excited to announce, “With such a wealth of homegrown talent, selecting the Canadian Rising Stars is never an easy task. We were blown away by this group and deeply impressed by these young, up-and-coming voices. I have no doubt they’ll go on to do big things, just like the Rising Stars who came before them.”
The Rising Stars programme will provide the chosen actors with the chance to engage with different parts of the prestigious Festival. They will have the opportunity to attend professional development sessions, top Industry events, star-studded red carpets and have access to exclusive mentorship.
The Toronto International Film Festival, which has become one of the most beloved cinematic events in the world, runs every year from the first Thursday in September for 11 days straight, marking this September 5th as the start date and September 15th as the end.
This year's TIFF will feature 18 Gala Presentations and 38 Special Presentations with 50 percent of Gala films directed or co-directed by women. ~Emily Chavez
