Don Jon DVD/Blu-ray review

Joseph Gordon-Levitt is all grown up in Don Jon, a quirky romantic drama-comedy also written and directed by the Lincoln star. The movie follows the life of Jon Martello (Gordon-Levitt), an old-fashioned, good-looking guy who only cares about a handful of things: his body, his pad, his family, his church, his boys and of course, his girls. Martello is even deemed “Don Jon” by his friends for his ability to have a different woman every weekend, but nothing seems to compare to his favorite pastime – porn. However, when he meets the beautiful and seemingly perfect Barbara (Scarlett Johansson), he is forced by his newfound love to choose between his relationship and addiction.

The film beautifully articulates the struggle of media culture and false fantasies, comparing Don Jon, a man who is in search of a sex life based on unrealistic expectations by the media, and Barbara, a woman raised on cheesy romantic Hollywood movies. Don Jon proves that Gordon-Levitt’s talents extend behind the camera, his writing unexpectedly hilarious in this unique rom-com film. The DVD/Blu-ray has interviews with the cast and crew and five featurettes that includes the “Making of Don Jon,” “Don Jon’s Origin,” “Objectified,” “Joe’s Hats!” and “Themes and Variations.” It also includes shorts by HitRECord, an online collaborative production company founded by Gordon-Levitt.
