A Monster Calls cast anything but monstrous on TIFF red carpet

From young and rising star to respected and seasoned veteran, the cast of A Monster Calls has it all.

At the world premiere of the film yesterday at Roy Thomson Hall, stars Lewis MacDougall, Sigourney Weaver and Felicity Jones, and director J.A. Bayona engaged with fans (and looked great in the process).

The film is adapted from Patrick Ness' award-winning children's book about a lonely boy struggling with his mother's failing health but escapes reality when a friendly, towering tree monster arrives in his room and tells him nightly stories.

Lewis plays Connor, the young boy, while Felicity portrays his mother, Sigourney his grandmother. Liam Neeson lends his voice to the monster.

On the red carpet, Lewis discussed his biggest challenge while shooting the film. He said, "It was getting in touch with the emotions Connor experiences. He experiences a wide variety of emotions and getting in touch with that was the hardest part."

Sigourney also opened up, saying she's not afraid of monsters or aliens (which she has a storied history with on film), but feared a certain animal as young girl. She said, "I was a little worried about leopards because my mother read me Ben-Hur when I was very small."

She then discussed the film and what Liam's signature voice adds to it. She said, "It's kind of an organic, unpredictable monster. Part of it is how Liam Neeson plays it. He has such wisdom and dignity. He's not afraid to be as strong as a monster can be."
