DC changes heart about Superman logo on murdered boy’s memorial

After hearing about five-year-old Jeffrey Baldwin, who was starved to death by his grandparents, Ottawa resident Todd Boyce asked Ontario artist Ruth Abernethy, known for her bronze statue of Toronto’s Glenn Gould, to design a memorial statue of Jeffery in his Superman costume. Boyce, who raised the funds for the memorial, said, “It was important for me because I really felt I wanted to capture the photograph of Jeffrey wearing his Superman costume and have it as close to that as possible.”

Jeffrey died in November 2002 after years of neglect. His father told the court during an inquest why Superman was so important to his son: “He wanted to fly. He tried jumping off the chair. We had to make him stop. He dressed up (as Superman) for Halloween one year. He was so excited. I have that picture at home hanging on my wall. He was our little man of steel.”

DC Entertainment initially refused permission for the Superman logo to appear on the statue, but yesterday the company changed their mind and released a statement that reads: “We are honored by the relationship that our fans have with our characters, and fully understand the magnitude of their passion. We take each request seriously and our heartfelt thoughts go out to the victims, the family and those affected. DC Entertainment uses a flexible set of criteria when we receive worthy requests such as this, and at times have reconsidered our initial stance. After verifying the support of appropriate family members, DC Entertainment will be allowing the Jeffrey Baldwin Memorial Statue to feature the Superman S Shield.” ~Andrea Hodgins

I remember this case, it haunted me! I applaud DC for their change of heart in allowing Jeffrey’s bronze statue to have the “S” on the shirt. However, I would really like to see the “J” on the shirt. Jeffrey WAS a superman(boy) to endure the cruelty he had inflicted on him. HE is the real superman here, not a fictional character and I truly believe the “J” would serve him better.

A very sad reason to have a statue, and I too applaud DC for their change of heart. That said, I also agree that Superman, if real, would change his insignia to “J”, be it for Jeffery or Justice

Way to go to DC Comics….First class response!!!!!….There are really big hearts at DC Comics………….

Totally agree to replace the “S” by a “J” to honor both the “Superman” and the “Superboy”.
