Terence Stamp Biography

TERENCE STAMP

Date of Birth: July 22, 1939

Stamp began his career in London, England, where he was born. He was nominated for an Oscar in his screen debut, Billy Budd, and won a Golden Globe as Most Promising Newcomer - Male. Three years later took home the Best Actor award from the Cannes Film Festival for his role as the psychotic kidnapper in The Collector.

At the height of his fame, Stamp had a bad fall out with his then-girlfriend, and took off to India for a five year hiatus, occasionally making trips back to England to appear in films. However, by the early 1980s, he was working steadily again. In 1994 he won a Golden Space Needle Award for his portrayal of a drag queen in The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (1994). In 2000, he won a number of awards for his role in The Limey (1999).

On New Year's Eve 2002, he was married to Elizabeth O'Rourke but they were divorced six years later on the grounds of his unreasonable behavior.

From 2003 to 2011, he lent his voice to the TV series Smallville, playing Superman's loving father Jor-El. On the big screen, his recent credits include Valkyrie (2008) with Tom Cruise and The Adjustment Bureau (2011) with Matt Damon.
