When you name your film Suck, you're inviting all kinds of odd headlines and comments. However, Canadian filmmaker Rob Stefaniuk has a sense of humor about his second feature film, calling it a rock 'n' roll film that has vampires in it, rather than the other way around. He reveals that he came up with the idea five years ago, before vampires became a big craze thanks to Twilight and True Blood. About two years ago, friends and business partners said, "Hurry up and finish the film! Vampires are hot right now!" Luckily for Stefaniuk, vampires are still blazing hot. And that's not all this film has going for it. He managed to assemble a cast that includes Iggy Pop, Alice Cooper, Henry Rollins, Dave Foley, Jessica Paré, Carole Pope and Moby. Suck screens tonight at 9:30 pm at Varsity 8; Sunday September 13 at 4:15 pm at Scotiabank Theatre 1, and Wednesday September 13 at 5:45 pm at Scotiabank Theatre 1. FYI, it can't Suck too bad, because two days before the festival started, it was picked up by film distributor Alliance for release in Canada, making it the first Canadian film to be sold at TIFF this year. Stefaniuk is hoping to land an American deal as well during the fest.
