The stars will be turning out for another big night at the 2010 Toronto International Film Festival, with Malin Akerman, Ryan Phillippe, Taylor Kitsch, Neels Van Jaarsveld and Frank Rautenbach hitting the red carpet tonight for the 1994 South African apartheid-bio The Bang Bang Club.
Based on a true story, The Bang Bang Club documents four real-life combat photographers in their attempt to bring international attention to the apartheid struggle in South Africa .
Often putting their lives at risk, their work won Pulitzer prizes, but left them psychologically scared and damaged for years to come. The Bang Bang Club journalist James Carter would later go on to commit suicide.
Star Malin Akerman, who spent 22-years living in Canada, talked passionately about her role to Tribute, Toni-Marie Ippolito. "To me they're heroes," she said.
"Instead of getting involved and shooting guns, they went out and shot cameras, and took pictures, and made sure the rest of the world saw it."
Co-star Ryan Phillippe echoed Akerman's sentiments, but admitted he initially had reservations about portraying an invasive photographer. That all changed though when he read a scene in The Bang Bang Club's script, where a bereft mother is photographed after losing her child.
"I realized that had there not been a camera in her face, no one would ever know why or how her child died."
Shot on location in South Africa, The Bang Bang Club's red carpet premiere hits Roy Thomson Hall on Sept.15.
Comments:
Nothing personal against Malin Akerman, but I really feel like she should be doing comedies instead of serious flicks like this one. Maybe I'm just a jaded Watchmen fan, but I think she's a lot better at being funny than she is at being dramatic.
