Discovery programme spotlights worldwide films

This year, TIFF’s Discovery programme will showcase 27 dynamic features from up-and-coming filmmakers, what TIFF calls the "future of world cinema." These films and directors come from all around the world including France, Sweden, Paraguay, Estonia, Serbia and the Ivory Coast. The programme will include a mix of North American, international and world premieres. “North American audiences have first found films like Athina Rachel Tsangari's Attenberg and Steve McQueen's Hunger in our Discovery programme,” says TIFF’s artistic director Cameron Bailey. “With another strong crop of films this year and two prizes specifically for Discovery filmmakers, Toronto continues to be a prime place for debut films.” Besides having the honor of premiering at the festival, films showcased in the Discovery programme are also eligible for two prestigious awards. The first is the new Grolsch Film Works Discovery Award that honors a director for their hard work and efforts to date and includes a $10,000 cash prize to help fund the winner’s next project. The second is the International Federation of Film Critics Award (FIPRESCI Prize) for the Discovery Programme, which is awarded by a jury. ~Isabelle Khoo
