Lionsgate and Roadside attractions are in the process of buying the U.S rights to Life of Crime, which will be closing the Toronto International Film Festival this year. A black comedy directed by Daniel Schechter, it follows two ex-cons as they attempt to kidnap and hold for ransom a Detroit millionaire's wife. Set in the 1970s, it stars John Hawkes, Yasiin Bey (better known as Mos Def), and Jennifer Aniston. Based on Elmore Leonard's 1978 novel The Switch, it begins the story of famed characters Odell Robbie and Louis Gara, who appeared in his 1992 novel Rum Punch and who were portrayed by Samuel L. Jackson and Robert De Niro in its 1997 cinematic adaptation Jackie Brown. Also starring Tim Robbins and Mark Boone Junior, Life of Crime will not only mark the last film of TIFF this year, but also serves as a send-off to Elmore Leonard, who passed away at 87 a week before the film was finished. ~Raj-Kabir Birk
