Open Road has closed a deal to handle U.S distribution for Eli Roth's horror thriller The Green Inferno. Produced by Worldview Entertainment, the film premiered September 7 at TIFF Midnight Madness, which showcases action, horror, and fantasy films. An ode to the Italian cannibal films of the '70s and '80s, it stars Lorenzo Izzo as Justine, an ambitious university student who joins a campus group that will travel to the Amazon to protect a tribe from the clear-cutting that threatens to distinguish their way of life. But when the plane crashes in a remote jungle, they become prey to the people they set out to protect. Directed and co-written by Roth, it is in a similar vein to his directorial efforts Cabin Fever and Hostel, as well as last year's Aftershock, which he co-wrote. A tendency towards gore, violence, and a subtle assessment of contemporary western culture, it enhances Roth's reputation as a strong director of shock-films.
