On the second day of TIFF, Night Raiders is the first gala premiere movie of the evening. Directed by Danis Goulet, it's about a mother who joins an underground band of vigilantes to try and rescue her daughter from a state-run institution. The film begins at Roy Thomson Hall at 5:30 p.m.
The second gala premiere of the evening at Roy Thomson Hall is Last Night in Soho. This one has a clever plot that involves a young woman (Thomasin McKenzie) who travels back in time and becomes involved in the life of a singer (Anya Taylor-Joy) in 1966. The stars arrive on the red carpet beginning at approximately 8:00 p.m., and the movie begins at 9:00 p.m. There's another screening of this film on Thursday September 16 at the Princess of Wales Theatre.
The Power of the Dog (pictured above) stars Benedict Cumberbatch as a complicated rancher who stirs up trouble for his brother (Jesse Plemons) and his brother's new bride (Kirsten Dunst). It premieres at The Princess of Wales at 5 p.m. this evening. The film also screens at 8:30 p.m. this evening at the Visa Skyline Drive-In at Ontario Place. Can't make either of those? There's one more showing on Saturday September 19 at TIFF Bell Lightbox at 3 p.m.
Lucile Hadžihalilović's new movie Earwig, about a young girl with ice cubes for teeth, has an interesting title and premise. It screens at 3 p.m. this afternoon at TIFF Bell Lightbox.
Any horse lovers out there? Jockey is about a middle-aged jockey who's facing the reality that his body may not hold up to the strain of racing much longer. Directed by Clint Bentley, this has a 3:30 p.m. screening time today at Scotiabank Theatre, with a repeat performance on Monday September 13, 6 p.m. at Scotiabank.
Locals will be familiar with the title of this next film, Scarborough. Based on Catherine Hernandez’s award-winning book, this Canadian film follows three kids living in Scarborough who find friendship and community in an unlikely place. Catch it at 4 p.m. today at TIFF Bell Lightbox, or on Saturday September 18 at 6 p.m., also at TIFF Bell Lightbox.
Mysterious events in the wake of a freak motorcycle accident sow the seeds of a new religion in Dug Dug, from director Ritwik Pareek. You can enjoy this film at the Cinesphere IMAX Theatre starting at 4 p.m. Can't make it? It also plays Wednesday September 15 at TIFF Bell Lightbox, 1:30 p.m.
The TIFF Special Presentation film Drive My Car from Japanese director Ryusuke Hamaguchi is based on a short story by Haruki Murakami, about two lonely people who find the courage to face the past. It makes its TIFF debut at Scotiabank Theatre at 5 p.m. today. Also screens Thursday September 16 at 1 p.m. at TIFF Bell Lightbox.
For night owls, Titane is screening as part of Midnight Madness, starting at 11:59 p.m. at the Princess of Wales Theatre. An automobile accident leaves disturbing consequences in this unflinching foray into human extremity from director Julia Ducournau.
