A rising lawyer's wife suddenly picks up and leaves him and their young son. As he wrestles with the responsibilities of single fatherhood, he is fired from his position at a prestigious big-city law firm. Taking another, lesser position in rural Kansas, he struggles to accept a life he never planned for. He finds romance with a spirited local woman, but complications arise when the boy's mother comes to reclaim her son.
