Artemisia Movie Synopsis
The fascinating true story of the first known female painter in art history. The story begins in 17th century Italy, where 17-year-old Artemisia has inherited a passion for painting from her father, Orazio, a well known painter in the Florentine tradition. This is a forbidden passion, as a woman has neither the right to attend classes at the Academy, nor to ask male models to pose nude.
Artemisia wants to paint the human figure and is persistent in her ambition. This anatomical quest mingles in an impalpable way with the beginnings of sexual desire.
I seldom see a film that I can’t find something wrong with. Artemisia is an exception. It is sensitively directed and wonderfully acted. Fabulous settings and costumes framed into a picture of classy and talented photography. Artemisia is a beautiful, intelligent and moving film.
