Happenstance Movie Synopsis
Petty criminal Henri Charriere (Steve McQueen) bears the nickname Papillon, because of the large butterfly tattoo on his chest, which symbolizes freedom. Wrongly convicted of murder, Charriere is sentenced to life. He is transported from France to Guyana in northern South America, to a prison known as Devil's Island. Determined to escape, Papillon manages to get away but is recaptured. Rather than live his life in chains, suffering brutality at the hands of the guards and solitary confinement, he perseveres, vowing to successfully escape or die trying.
