Nanjing, December 1937. An American (Christian Bale) hides inside a church with a bunch of frightened school children from maurading Japanese soldiers who are burning the city to the ground. They're soon joined in the church by a dozen seductive courtesans.
Because the Japanese won't harm Westerners, the man is convinced by the women to pose as a priest in order to protect the children from certain death or worse.
The movie had a great cast and the story was well put together offering a heart wrenching and multifaceted glimpse into the suffering and pain the Japanese inflicted upon the Chinese during that war. It broke my heart and at the same time illustrated a touching heroicism. Zhang Yimou is an awesome director.
my favourite bale movie period. and that's saying a lot because i loved the dark knight trilogy.
excellent movie, great plot, outstanding action and acting.
