Avatar dethroned by chick flick
February 8, 2010 | 2 Comments
The romantic drama Dear John, Hollywood’s fifth adaptation of a Nicholas Sparks’ novel, has knocked Avatar off the top spot at the weekend box office. The chick flick, starring Channing Tatum and Amanda Seyfried, sold $32.4 million worth of tickets in the U.S. and Canada from Friday through Sunday, while Avatar earned $23.6 million in the same time period. The news came as a surprise, as pre-release polling predicted Avatar would hold on to the top spot for several more weeks. Dear John tested well when it was previewed before screenings of The Twilight Saga: New Moon. According to exit polls taken this past weekend, Dear John’s audience was 84 percent female, with 64 percent under 21. The next romantic drama expected to do well at the box office is Remember Me, starring Twilight’s Robert Pattinson as a troubled college student in New York City who unexpectedly falls in love with the daughter (Lost’s Emily de Ravin) of a police officer who arrests him.
