The Hobbit No. 1 at box office

After months of anticipation, Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey debuted at number one at the weekend box office, raking in an impressive $84.7 million. Receiving a high 4.5 out of a possible 5 stars from Tribute.ca users, Sir Ian McKellen returns as Gandalf the Wizard and Martin Freeman stars as the lovable Hobbit Bilbo Baggins in this adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s 1937 novel. Peter Ramsey’s animated feature Rise of the Guardians comes in second, making $7.4 million during its fourth weekend in theaters. Featuring celebrity voices like Alec Baldwin and Hugh Jackman, this holiday film holds a favorable 4.3 star rating. Steven Spielberg’s historical drama Lincoln comes in third place, making $7.2 million for its 6th week in theaters. Starring Daniel Day-Lewis as the 16th president of the United States and Sally Field as his first lady Mary Todd, Lincoln maintains a high 4.5 star rating. Also in its 6th week in theaters is Sam Mendes’ Skyfall, which falls to fourth place, making $7 million. Starring Daniel Craig as 007, Skyfall maintains its 4 star rating. Rounding out the top five is Ang Lee’s Life of Pi, which made $5.4 million but saw its popularity rise to 4.4 stars on Tribute.ca. ~Brandon Bastaldo

Suneagle’s Review 4*’s Sorry I rate LOTR 5/5 but Hobbit took way too many unnecessary risks. From shooting in 35mm FILM in LOTR to now in digital 48frms and also 3D was too much of a leap into a new vision for audiences to adjust too. 48frms brings out 3D amazing yes bit it also showcases every flaw a film director would make and creates new ones. 3D was a good choice but 48frames was so pristine crisp that movies are still way to far back technology wise to make anything look that good at that speed. The graphics and detail of the movie needed to be beyond 100% to handle 48frms and not to mention the acting my god the acting was the worst I’ve ever seen it in this series and that was because 48frms made it look cheesy. Once the film switched to its original 24frms and the cinematic look came back, it faired MUCH MUCH better and once Golem who is the best actor in the film came into play the film started to look believable other than fake, phony, and funny B rated style it started off with thx to 48frms and the acting. You need a certain look to up keep the original feeling, music and flow from the master piece of LOTR and it was not there (at fitst) But then once 48frms went away it changed the whole beat of the movie and the AWESOMENESS of middle earth came back to life! That being said the movie still held fantastic scenery and fantastic battle scenes (best in the series so far) Drwarves were amazing as they should be and Gandolf kicked ASS!! So don’t worry this is still one heck of a fantastic Fantasy flick and one not to miss. Enjoy it Avx 3D dont go for highframe unless you understand it and want to see it otherwise no high frame. 48frms would of maybe worked for a different movie that didnt have the standards that were set no problem but it was used completely incorrectly in this movie sorry Peter. Love ya bud Thx for the experience though 🙂 Also the music needed a revamp. Why make it exactly the same? After watching all these 3 movies then the 3 LOTR don’t you think someone will get sick of the sound track really I mean c’mon. Here is were you see the inexperience of Peter shining only when he made LOTR and KONG. Still can’t wait for the second one hope it’s better than this. Expected much MUCH more from him and this series.
