Films featuring tales of unfathomable resilience, epic adventure, immense talent or extreme hardship have captivated moviegoers since motion pictures were first projected onto screens. Many of these stories are the product of brilliant imagination – an ingenious screenwriter is struck with an idea, holes him or herself up in a dingy motel room and emerges three weeks later with a mesmerizing screenplay in hand. But an equal number of gripping films are born out of real-life people or events. An affecting journey, a heinous demonstration of pure evil or a powerful display of the human spirit have formed and continue to inspire some of the most poignant movies released.
