Born in Tipton, Missouri, David Koechner studied Political Science at the University of Missouri. However, his main love was comedy and acting, so he moved to Chicago to study with legendary improv teacher Del Close. He also studied with Chicago's ImprovOlympic improvisation troupe before joining the Second City Touring Company, where he was spotted by Lorne Michaels, creator of the late night TV series Saturday Night Live. In 1995 David joined the SNL cast and spent one season on the show. One of his first film roles was in Wag the Dog (1997), starring Dustin Hoffman and Robert De Niro. His next role in a major studio film was playing the co-pilot in Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me (1999).

Koechner continued to work steadily with roles in films as well as guest spots on hit series such as Dharma & Greg, Mad About You, Freaks & Geeks and Curb Your Enthusiasm before landing a regular role on the CBS sitcom, Still Standing. On the hit Disney series Hannah Montana, he was memorable as Miley's eccentric Uncle Earl. He also played a regular role as Todd Packer on the hit series The Office.

Koechner began to get progressively larger roles in films such as Waking Up in Reno (2002) with Billy Bob Thornton and Charlize Theron; My Boss's Daughter (2003) with Ashton Kutcher; Anchorman (2004) with Will Ferrell; Drillbit Taylor (2008) starring Owen Wilson; Final Destination 5 (2011); the sequel Piranha 3DD (2012); the comedy Hit & Run (2012) with Dax Shepard, Kristen Bell and Bradley Cooper; and the comedic spoof A Haunted House (2013) with Marlon Wayans. He also reprised his Anchorman role in the sequel, Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues (2013). He most recently starred in the comedy No Clue (2014).

David and his wife, Leigh, were married in June 1998. They have four children.
