Born in Lille, France, Philippe Noiret trained at the Centre Dramatique de l'Ouest before making his stage debut. His work ranged from nightclub cabaret to performing the classics with Paris’ Theatre National Populaire, appearing in plays such as Richard II, El Cid, Don Juan and Mary Tudor. Officially, Noiret made his film debut in La Pointe Courte (1956), but he first learned his way around a movie set by appearing as an extra in several films, including the 1948 French film Gigi (later remade in English starring Leslie Caron).
He has divided his screen time between TV movies and films, including Louis Malle’s classic Zazie dans le metro (1960). Throughout his more than 50 years in showbusiness, he has appeared in over 100 Italian, French, British and American feature films. Some of the highlights of his career include receiving a Best Actor BAFTA award for his starring role in Cinema Paradiso (1989), a Best Actor award for Therese Desqueryroux (1962) at Cannes, and two Best Actor César awards for Le vieux fusil (1975) and La vie et rien d'autre (1989).
Now in his seventies, Noiret, who continues to work steadily to this day, has been married since 1962 to actress Monique Chaumette.
